How To Make New Year’s Resolutions For Your Relationship
The New Year is a great time to start over.’start over.’ It’s a time for you to make new promises to yourself in order to have a brighter and better future. People make these resolutions for all sorts of reasons: personal fulfillment, better health, longer lives, and even a greater appreciation of the lives they have.
Sadly, very few couples take advantage of this time to make new resolutions for their marriages. The New Year is a great time to start over and make new commitments to yourselves and each other. These tips will help you make resolutions that are built to last while building a stronger and happier marriage.
Sit Down Together to Come up with Them
Resolutions you make together are going to hold a much greater significance to the two of you. It also allows you the opportunity to hold one another accountable. More importantly though, when you sit down together to come up with them, you each have the opportunity to air problems you’re having in the relationship and see what can be done to solve them.
Relationships are about two people coming together to live a united life. You’re still individual people who are married to other people, who lack the clairvoyance to decipher what it is that you want and/or need from them. You have to tell them what your needs are if they aren’t being met. This is an ideal time to do so.
Put them in Writing
There’s something about seeing the words in print that makes them more ‘real’ to everyone involved. Write down your New Year’s Resolutions to your relationship. Bind yourselves and each other to those words and hold each other accountable to living up to them. If you don’t want to post them where anyone walking into your home can see them, post them somewhere where the two of you will have easy access to them whenever you need to be reminded or when you just want to see how you’re progressing.
The other benefit of putting them in writing though is that there is a certain amount of implied commitment to the words on the page simply by placing them there. How often have you gone to the grocery store with a mental list of items you needed only to get home and realize you’ve forgotten a few of them. Yet, when you write them down on a piece of paper, you are often able to get them all – even if you leave the list at home.
